Sonshine Devotional Day 24

Published Mar 19, 2010 07:00:06 AM

My friends, the time has come—-tonight and tomorrow afternoon, the Sonshine Singers will be at Iowa Central Community College, in Fort Dodge and will present a beautiful music ministry entitled, “God’s Wondrous Love for Us!”

For several weeks, I have emailed you devotionals reflecting the message from each anthem that the vocalists will be presenting.  As you recall, we began with “God So Loved the World”….a beautiful depiction in song of John 3:16.  Because God loved us so much, He sent His Son…a baby in a manger…to dwell among us, teach us, heal us and finally to give His very life for us.

Each ministry that Sonshine has presented over the last 11 years, has always had a sacred theme however, this years’ ministry is even more scripturally based—if that is possible.  In fact, many of the anthems have direct quotes out of God’s Holy Word….a real gift to set scripture into music.

So, in closing, won’t you come to Iowa Central and feel God’s love surround you this Friday and/or Saturday as the Sonshine Singers lift up praises to our heavenly Father?  What if…..because of this event, your life could be changed forever?  What if ….Jesus is calling you to a “Sweet Hour of Prayer”…..what if He is asking you to “Prepare Ye the Way” for Him to come into your life in a very powerful way?

The invitation has been sent—-bring your family, bring your church family, invite your friends and neighbors…..better yet…invite a total stranger, but come Friday night at 7:00pm or Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm.  You may want to do both—-I am!  :)

Sonshine Devotional Day 23

The King is Coming

Revelation 19:11, “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.”

I grew up in the country.  Every morning and evening I rode the school bus.  I learned early on to make friends with kids bigger than me.  One day, some kids were teasing me, I don’t know why, I’m so lovable and I know I didn’t deserve it.  :)   It was probably a spat over whose Dad had the best tractor (red or green.)

Ronnie (he was BIG) got up from the back of the bus, came forward, and sat beside me.  That ended the discussion for the day.  It helps if Ronnie is your cousin.  I felt liberated and safe from persecution.

In this world, we all feel like I did on the bus that day.  Frightened, alone and wondering how do I get out of this?  Then without a plea for help, I am rescued.

One day soon, Jesus will step from the back of the bus to deliver us all.  But we won’t need to turn our head to see Who is coming.  We will lift our hand to the clouds and see our rescuer draw nigh.  The King will be coming just for you….just for me.

When you see that moment arrive, what joy will fill your heart!  When you hear the trumpet sound, look to the east, for it is from the east you will see His face.  With arms outstretched, He will whisk you aboard His chariot rumbling.  Heaven bound to join Heaven’s choir!

There will be no more time to harvest.  The busy streets will cease.  All your focus will be on the King!

Sonshine Devotional Day 22

Published Mar 17, 2010 07:00:46 AM

Hallelujah! Thine the Glory

Hallelujah….Christ Arose!  The sorrowful days to the cross have been transformed into the promised day of the Resurrection!  From Mark 16 vs. 6, “Don’t be alarmed,” the angel said, “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified.  He has risen!  He is not here.  See the place where they laid him.  But go; tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee.  There you will see him, just as he told you.”  Imagine the excitement of that moment….He died, He arose on the third day, and they were told where to find Him.

I have read this story many times and each time I am reminded of the “human-ness” of the disciples.  In Mark 14 vs. 27-28, following the Lord’s Supper, Jesus and the disciples went out to the Mount of Olives.  Hear Jesus words, “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’  But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”  In other words, Jesus told the disciples many times about His death and His resurrection—-but they were still surprised and some did not believe the report that came to them that Jesus was indeed alive.  No wonder Jesus said to Thomas, “…blessed are those who have not seen and yet they believe.”

Just like the disciples, we too have our moments of disbelief as God quietly reminds us…I told you I would take care of you, I’ve asked you not to worry, I’ve asked you to forgive one another…I’ve asked you to— simply love Me.

As this anthem states, “All glory and praise to the Lamb that was slain, Who has borne all our sins and has cleansed every stain.  Revive us again; fill each heart with Thy love; May each soul be rekindled with fire from above…..Hallelujah– Thine the Glory!”

Php. 2 vs. 9-11, “Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Ten Thousand Angels

This anthem beautifully depicts what Christians have come to know as Good Friday and our Saviors’ walk from the Garden of Gethsemane to Calvary.

As we think of that day from this side of the cross, we know the glorious outcome.  But think for a moment about the other side of the cross….the side from which Jesus family, His disciples and the multitudes of people He healed were watching.  What sadness must have filled their hearts.  What agony it must have been for Jesus’ mother, Mary, to watch as her Son was mocked, beaten, and crucified on the cross.

I’m certain many who had witnessed Jesus miracles of curing the blind, healing the lame, and bringing the dead back to life wondered, “Why did He not call upon His angels to rescue Him?”  Even as He prayed to His Father“….let this cup pass from me” He concluded that prayer with “…but not my will, but Thine be done.”  Jesus was sent to earth to die on the cross so that we might have eternal life.  You see, God gave us His most precious gift….that’s how much He loves us.

And now, my friends, we are on this side of the cross and I believe our responsibility becomes even greater in our world today.  We know the outcome of Jesus death on the cross consequently our “commission” to witness that Good News should not be taken lightly.  Witness in word, witness in deed, witness in song…..He died for you…won’t you live for Him?

Sonshine Devotional Day 20

Prepare Ye The Way

We are told that John the Baptist “prepared the way” for Jesus Christ.  In Matthew 3 vs. 1-3, “In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”  This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.”

Three days from today, March 19th, is the Sonshine Singer Music Ministry…..have you prepared a way to come and worship with us that evening?  Better yet, have you contacted your friends, relatives, and made announcements in your churches to encourage everyone you know to come and be touched by the Holy Spirit?  And even better yet…..have you invited someone that may not know about the Good News of Jesus Christ to be a part of this event?

Let’s think about John the Baptist for a moment.  There he was….standing waste deep in the Jordan River baptizing others and then….there was Jesus.  John gave this testimony, from John 1 vs. 32, “I saw the spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.  I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’  I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.”

Now …this day…it is our turn to join John the Baptist and “Prepare the way.”  Prepare our hearts to be touched and prepare our lives to be changed.  Join me now and bow your heads in prayer.  Pray for this ministry….for the singers, musicians, and all involved… that the words of each song may be lifted up in honor and glory of Jesus Christ.  Come and celebrate the Good News with us this weekend!!!

Sonshine Devotional Day 19

Sweet Hour of Prayer

Do you need comfort and relief from the grief that burdens your soul, your life?  Of course you do, we all need a solace…a time apart to be with the Lord.  Do you have such a place?  Hear the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:6, “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into the closet, and when thou hast shut the door, pray to thy Father, which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

As I grow older, I am beginning to realize that a time apart for reflection and meditation calms my soul.  During that time, my heart ceases its racing as I am called from a world of care to my Father’s throne.

In season and out of season, Jesus is always there when you go to Him in a sweet hour of prayer.  Won’t you take just an hour?  Can’t spare an hour?  How about just five minutes?

During that time, cast on Him your every care.  He’s waiting to hear from you.  Listen to His words of invitation from Matthew 11: 28-30, “Come unto me, all that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

You can’t afford the time for a sweet hour of prayer?  My friends, we not only need to take the time—we can’t afford not to “…..and oft escaped the tempter’s snare, by thy return sweet hour of prayer.”

In His Service, I Remain,

Sonshine Devotional…Day 18

Standing and Leaning Medley

Two very traditional anthems, “Standing on the Promises” and “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” are combined in this dynamic gospel arrangement.  I am convinced that God touches the writers’ pens and hearts as they put music to Biblical verses.  For instance, in 2nd Corinthians Chapter 1 vs. 20-21 we read, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ.  And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.  Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ.”  Isn’t He wonderful….as we hear these songs, they are a testimony to God’s Word!

That has been one of the many blessings of Sonshine in my life.  Most of you know…I can’t sing—now one day in Heaven that will be the gift I will cherish most….but for now….I can’t sing.  But I can listen!  As I drive in my car and play the old and new Sonshine CD’s, (Armona won’t let me listen to anything else—just kidding) :) I receive the blessing of God’s Holy Word in song.  It speaks to me, it lifts me up, it touches my heart and replenishes my soul.  And yes—I know those songs so well….I SING THEM AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS!  It’s just me and my car—-worshiping God!  Actually, when Armona and I are traveling together —she tells me to sing with her….those are the moments I’m concerned about her. :)

So as we “Stand on His Promises” and “Lean on the Everlasting Arms” of Jesus, let us remember everything He has done for us.  As you attend the upcoming Sonshine Ministry, I know you will love the music!  You will be sitting on the edge of your seats during the energetic anthems, and you will be moved to tears with those songs that touch your very soul.  But always remember the main purpose of this wonderful ministry—-come and worship a loving Father Who sent His Son for YOU…and that’s a promise you can stand on!

Sonshine Devotional Day 17

The Prayer with Lead Us Lord

The writer of this anthem has taken a beautiful song, “The Prayer,” (made popular by Celine Dion, Josh Groban and other artists) and skillfully inserted the familiar anthem,” Lead Me Lord” in the midst of it.   Now there’s a thought…. combining prayer with asking God to lead us—a lesson in and of itself!!

The writer of this anthem, though creative, did not have the “original” thought regarding prayer.  There are so many references to prayer in the Bible–obviously, God felt prayer was very important to all of us.  In 1st Thessalonians 5 vs. 16-18 we read, “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  How true….we don’t just come to Jesus with only our sorrows and our problems—we can talk to Him about our joys and our blessings too!  You see, it really isn’t WHAT we talk to Him about….it’s that we TALK to Him.  We should pray to Him as easily as we talk to one another.

Regarding “Lead us, Lord” portion, I think of the story Armona told me about her Mom and Dad as they traveled on unfamiliar roads out East in the Appalachian Mountains.  The conversation went like this, “Armon, I think you’re lost,” Mom quietly said, “Why don’t you stop at that gas station on the corner and ask for directions?”  (This will be a little painful to the men in the reading audience. :(   “I am not lost,” Armon exclaimed, “and I don’t need directions!”  After driving for an hour, going over hills and making many turns, they soon arrived at the same stop sign by the same gas station that they were at one hour earlier.  Mom calmly looked at Armon and said, “Now that we’ve gone 60 bull-headed miles out of the way, would you please ask for directions?” :)

There’s a wonderful lesson here—-don’t go any bullheaded miles out of your way to get to Jesus.  Pray to Him, “Lead me, Lord…Lead me in Your righteousness; Make your way plain; for us to see!”

Sonshine Devotional Day 16

Just a Closer Walk with Thee

From the time our kids were little, we have always taken a family vacation.  In fact, Todd was only 9 months old when we took off in our blue Chevelle–that was NOT air conditioned– and headed to Glacier National Park in Montana.  No car seats, just a homemade platform that fit across the back seat for Todd to crawl around in and we were off on an adventure.  After Lisa was born, the vacations continued and, as both kids became older, we discovered a great love for hiking.

When our children were small, I would always marvel at how I would barely be moving—-but they were almost running to keep up.  Around 2 to 3 years of age, we would hang on to their hands, walk slowly beside them, and be there to catch them if they fell.  As we hiked through parks, mountains, or walked along a riverbank, we were constant guardians—always being the protective parents.

Many times I think back on those wonderful days….we still love to hike as a family and enjoy time together but now we hear our children saying, “Be careful, Mom and Dad, there’s a step down” or “Don’t fall on the ice” or “Didn’t you see we were parked right behind you?” :)

All of this to say….Jesus looks at us the same way as we lovingly watch our children.  As we walk through our faith journey with Him, He shares our every joy!  He lovingly holds us up during our times of despair   and, when we can no longer carry ourselves; His “footsteps” sink deeper in the sand as He carries us.

As this anthem so beautifully says, “I am weak…but Thou art strong…Jesus keep me from all wrong…I’ll be satisfied as long…as I walk..let me walk close to Thee.”

Operator

Now, this anthem will need a little bit of explanation….and yet, I don’t want to “give away” the narration that will be read explaining this anthem the night and afternoon of the upcoming Sonshine Ministry!  Such a dilemma ….but I’ll at least give you a hint of what this song is about.

First of all it was originally written 1959….wow that dates us doesn’t it?  Just as the 50’s had wonderful “pop” music this anthem has, not only a jivin’ rhythm, but a tremendous message.

You see, in the 50’s…the only way you could make a “long distance” call (one out of your area code) was to contact the operator.  In this instance, the writer is trying to reach the operator to make a long distance call …..to Jesus.  Can’t give anymore of the message away, but I guarantee….you won’t want to miss this fun up-tempo anthem!!

But, while we are on the subject of contacting Jesus…..isn’t it wonderful that we can just go to Him directly in prayer?  What a blessing He pours on His children.  He’s always with us, always listening to us—whether we are happy, sad, or indifferent—Jesus is just a prayer away.

Take time this day….right now…to close your eyes and thank Him for being your Heavenly Father.  Thank Him for the blessings you receive, thank Him for the beauty of His creation, and thank Him for sending His only Son to carry you when your burdens become too much to bear.

Remember….you don’t need an “Operator”…..to get Jesus on the line!!

Come To the Table of Grace

If you haven’t had an opportunity to read the book, An Invitation to Dinner, I would highly recommend that you do so.  It is a short story about a business man who received an unsigned invitation to dinner.  He was curious about who sent it to him and decided to go to the designated restaurant, only to discover the “host” who extended the invitation…… was Jesus.

Can you imagine being invited to dinner by Jesus?  Just think of how each of us would respond when we saw Him!  Would we recognize Him—or, maybe more importantly….would He recognize us?

Think of all the times Jesus talked to His disciples and taught them so many important lessons about life …….and life after death.  He also taught multitudes of people in the cities, on the mountainsides…many times offering a meal and never turning anyone away.

You are aware that Jesus constantly invites you to “His Table of Grace,” aren’t you?  From Revelation 3 vs. 20, we read, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”

Our heavenly Father also asks us to extend a loving invitation to all we meet and share the “Good News” of Jesus Christ.  From Matthew 28 vs. 19 “….therefore go and make disciples of all nations…”

As this anthem so wonderfully states, “Come to the Table of Grace…Join us as we Celebrate….the Call of Salvation is your Invitation to Come—-Come to the Table of Grace!”  Join the Sonshine family as we celebrate “God’s Wondrous Love for Us!!”

Sonshine Devotional Day 13

Published Mar 06, 2010 09:05:46 PM

Battle Hymn of the Republic

The above anthem powerfully closes the first half of the Sonshine Singers’ ministry…which is now about a week and a half away!  Please continue to pray for the singers, musicians, and each individual planning on attending this wonderful event!  May God’s glory be lifted up in praise and adoration as the Holy Spirit touches the hearts of all present!

After the past few months of winter we’ve all enjoyed so much, :(   I recall the many obstacles that seemed to confront the Sonshine Singers since rehearsals began the second weekend of January.  As you think back to January and February…however painful that may be…you will remember that many of our blizzards happened on Sunday afternoons and continued through the evening.  When do you think the Sonshine Singers rehearse?  Yep…. Sunday afternoons.  Many times as many as 40 singers were absent due to weather and road conditions.

Isn’t that just like Satan to try to block the wonderful message of Jesus Christ?  Notice….I said, “try to block.”  Because even though there were Sundays that singers and accompanists couldn’t make the rehearsals due to sickness or weather conditions, they continued to work on the music at home.  Everyone is now even more determined to make certain this ministry will be even more powerful, because of the obstacles placed before them.

Many times, our personal lives seem to be under attack as well.  Satan “tries” to make us stumble and fall….he surrounds us when we are hurting and vulnerable, as he battles for our very soul.  But hear what the Lord says, from Isaiah 43: 1-3, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.  For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”

You see, God sent Jesus to fight the battle for us—to overcome sin and death so that we may have eternal life!  The victory is ours and as this song so strongly declares….Glory Glory Hallelujah….His Truth Is Marching On!!

Sonshine Devotional Day 12

Let All the People Say, AMEN

In reading the words of this anthem, I am filled with excitement and anticipation of how all of our lives will be touched in a powerful way when Sonshine energizes the congregation with this number!! Let me share some of the words with you….as a matter of fact, this can be a “preview for all ages” of the upcoming ministry on March 19th and 20th.

“Shout unto God with a voice of triumph….triumph in the victory of the Lord, strong and mighty. The everlasting God and the King of Kings…Shout to God with a voice of triumph and clap your hands for the Lord God is AWESOME and He is king over all the earth….the King over all the earth…Let All the People say…AMEN and Let Your Will Be Done Again!!

Not only will this be an exciting anthem, it also has some very clear and concise instruction about our faith journey. Yes, we are to shout unto God in a triumphant voice….praising and glorifying Him. But did you also catch that last line “….and let Your will be done again?”

How many times when we bow our heads in prayer do we end that prayer with the words.. let Your will be done? Too often our prayers are filled with requests that are heavy laden with what we want and sometimes even suggestions of the best way for God to fulfill those prayers. Don’t misunderstand….God wants to hear from us about everything in our life—the deepest desires of our hearts, our hurts, our joys, and our praises …He wants us to love Him so much that we dedicate our very life to Him. For God is an all knowing Father…..listening to His children’s prayers and discerning what is best for them. Even Jesus qualified His request to His Father with a loving obedience to God’s plan. Hear His prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane in Matthew 26 vs. 42, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

Isn’t it wonderful to know that God is God…..and we are not? So believe, my friends, that we are called to love and worship our “everlasting God and the King of Kings!” What a tremendous blessing God gives each of us in knowing that He IS in charge and we can trust His answer in all our prayers! LET ALL THE PEOPLE SAY…..AMEN—AND LET YOUR WILL BE DONE AGAIN!!

Say It Loud!

uke 19, vs. 36-37 says, “Then the crowds spread out their robes along the road ahead of Him and as they reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, the whole procession began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles Jesus had done.”

Three things we are taught not to talk about, politics, religion, and I forget the other one. So I have an advantage over you if you know the third topic…..I only need to remember two!

Now if you can’t talk about religion, excluding the preacher on “Sunday morning”, I wonder if we will ever “make disciples of all nations!”If you can’t speak the Word, how can you spread the Word?

How is your mission to evangelize the world going? I know…you are thinking that’s an impossible task. O.K. then, let me narrow the focus just a little. How is you mission to evangelize just one person going?

If you are not speaking the Word to your neighbor, how will they ever hear the call?

On Palm Sunday, the crowds were singing loud Hosanna. They were jubilant that Jesus was coming to town. They were telling the world what Jesus had done. They were not quiet about Jesus!

Have you shared the salvation message of Jesus with anyone lately? Ask God to put someone in your life that needs to hear of Jesus’ love. Then ask God for courage to share the Good News. When you share it, my friends….say it loud!

Give Me Jesus

All of us in our life want things. The more things we have, the more things we want. At the end of our life, we’ve accumulated all these things that once were so important to us only to see our children box those precious things up, carry them out to a hayrack, and they are auctioned off and sold to a complete stranger for pennies on the dollar. Ever wonder, what’s going to happen to your things?

One of my favorite people is Corrie Ten Boom. (If any of you out there ever met her, tell me the story.) She loved Jesus so much, hear what she said about things. “I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, I still possess.”

How many things have you held in your hand? You know, that at the end of the day, it is not what you hold in your hand that is important. What is important is that which you hold in your heart.

Is Jesus living in your heart? One day you will meet Him face to face. There is no doubt in my mind that you will know before whom you stand. The question is…. will Jesus know you?

Don’t let Satan auction you off to one of his demons for a cheap price. You are more precious than silver and gold to Jesus. He bought you with His blood and He will not let anyone carry you to be sold…for you are not for sale!!

All you need to do is say three simple words—Give Me Jesus. He will come and live in your heart!

On The Rock That Is Higher Than I

When we were in Israel, we stood on a rock in the Valley of Jezreel. A city named Megiddo once occupied this high point overlooking the entire valley. From here you can look west to Jordan, north to Syria, and south to Egypt.

Strategically, it is the high point in the valley. Tradition tells us that in battle, if you hold the high point, you gain an advantage.

It is in the Valley of Jezreel that the battle of Armageddon will be fought. We are told that all the armies of the world will assemble here to not fight against each other, but to fight against the Lord.

This may be the very rock from which the anti Christ will draft his battle plan and direct his troops. From Megiddo, he has a commanding view of all the strength his armies possess. I imagine that for a time he will feel strong and mighty.

When the battle begins, he will quickly discover his rock has no chance against the Rock that is higher. As surely as the rising sun blinds his eye, he will have no hope against Jesus who will come in victory with a two edged sword going out from His mouth. The battle will be over before the anti Christ can say, “Charge.”

Don’t put your trust in any rock…..unless it is the Rock of Ages!

He Never Failed Me Yet

The first time I went ice fishing, my father-in-law scared me to death. Come to think of it, maybe Armona and I were just engaged. Maybe he thought if I fell through the ice, it would look like and accident. :) His name was Armon. (Now you know where the name Armona came from.)

Well, Armon didn’t have an ice auger like most ice fishermen. He had an axe. And he also knew that where the ice was “thinly coated” it meant someone had just fished there, they left, and then the opening re-froze–lightly. Being a novice…I wasn’t aware of that “thickness” concept. Anyway, since I was trying to make a good impression, I took the axe first, aimed where Armon directed, and with one big swing—-the axe plunged through the ice and water came bubbling up through the hole. You can imagine my shock—after all, the car was parked only a few feet away and suddenly what I assumed was ice at least a couple feet thick had been penetrated with one swing of an axe. I refer you back to paragraph one, the third sentence! :)

You know, just the act of walking out on the ice is a test of faith. I felt confident and had faith the ice would hold us up as we drove the car out onto the lake. But in a moment, my faith in the ice was tested when water began to spill out of that hole.

In our life, there are times we walk onto the ice. On our faith journey, we need to always beware of thin ice. Sometimes we find ourselves on thin ice through no fault of our own. It is at those moments, we need to turn to the Lord.

When on the thin ice, you need to ask Jesus for thicker ice…..more faith. As this anthem I’m writing about states, you need “to trust and never doubt, Jesus will surely bring you out—He’s never failed me yet”…..nor will He!!

Sonshine Devotional Day 7

Comfort Ye

If you’ve traveled through Ayrshire, Iowa, there is a black top road that goes west out of town. If you’ve been in Aryshire, you know not to ask, “Which one?” because there is only one road that goes west.

At the end of that road is a cemetery. Years ago, there was a sign on that road. It said, “High-way to Heaven.” The sign is gone now, but I always think of it as I travel through that town.

Isaiah 40:3 says, “Make straight a highway for the Lord.” Now as I think about that verse, I consider all the engineering and man hours it must have taken to make that two mile “highway to heaven” blacktop. And where does it lead? It leads to a dead end at the cemetery.

Too many people live their life as if they are on a dead end road. So many people are downtrodden and forlorn today. On the road they live, they only can look west toward the cemetery. They can see no hope.

For those of us who don’t live on that road, what are we to do? Isaiah 40:1 states, “Comfort, oh comfort my people…” –and that is our charge! We are to prepare a road for the Lord. In other words, for those people who live on that dead end road, for those people who always face west toward the cemetery, we as followers of Christ must make them realize something very important. If you can look west on the highway toward the cemetery, you can also look east toward a new dawn!! Remember, the voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low, the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it.” Together…..we will comfort God’s people and make a highway for our Lord!!

Bow the Knee

The anthem listed above is the featured number of the women’s chorus for the Sonshine Singer ministry March 19th and 20th. It is a powerful statement of our Christian journey and I’m certain all who hear it will be touched with this message of our faithfulness to our Father.

You see, when we “bow the knee” and “bow our head,” we are in an act of submission. In Webster’s dictionary, to “bow” means “to bend the head or body in an act of agreement or respect.” Many times throughout Jesus life, people came and “knelt before Him.” Even at His birth…many journeyed to kneel and worship Him. As Jesus traveled with His disciples, there were rulers, men and women with blindness, illness, and all types of maladies, who all came and “knelt before Him.” And yes, even Jesus knelt in the Garden of Gethsemane to pray to His heavenly Father.

Have you ever literally knelt in prayer to Jesus in your home, at your place of business, or as you hiked all alone in the beauty of the earth He created? And if you did, was it at a time when your heart was heavy and filled with sadness? I have had times in my life when the burdens were so heavy….I knelt to Jesus in prayer. But this day, I’d like to challenge you to not only kneel when your heart is heavy, but to kneel in thanksgiving, kneel in worship, kneel in honor of the One Who died for you!

Just as this anthem, Bow the Knee, states—-”And when you don’t understand, the purpose of His plan, in the presence of the King….Bow the Knee.” The message is simple….during the good times or the bad times—we praise God.

In Philippians 2 vs. 9-11, “Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Sonshine Devotional Day 5

Bless that Wonderful Name

Immanuel, First and Last, God our Savior, Holy One, Lord of lords and King of kings, Lord Almighty, Lord of Glory, Yahweh, the Shepherd…these are only some of the names by which we know Him. The most wonderful name came from heaven above. It was delivered by an angel to Joseph. Hear the story from Matthew 1:20-21, “Joseph son of David,” the angel said, “don’t hesitate to take Mary as your wife! For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a Son and you shall name Him, Jesus (meaning Savior), for He will save His people from their sins.”

If someone rescued you from a raging river, would you just dry yourself off, say thanks, and be on your way? We all remember the name Captain Sully, who piloted and landed his aircraft on the Hudson River only a little over a year ago. He saved his passengers. They all remember, and I’ll make a wager that they will never forget his name. To those he rescued, his name will not be forgotten.

Who’s piloting the aircraft of life in which you travel? Is it someone you have put your complete trust in? Someone who will never fail you when your engine fails?

Jesus sits in the captain’s seat in my heart. Throughout my life, whenever I have encountered turbulence, whenever my life seems to be on the verge of crashing into the river, it is Jesus who pilots my rescue.

As the ground races upward and I’m about to die, I know I can trust the blessed name of Jesus to rescue me. In those moments, I sing and praise the name of Jesus. And while yet alive, I will preach the wonderful name of Jesus!

Blessings in Christ,
Allan

Hark the Herald

Have you ever experienced a life changing event? We all have at some point in our lives, I’m certain. When we are in the midst of the event, it feels as if the whole world surely must know what is happening at this moment to us.

We read the Bethlehem story and get caught up in the pageantry of the angels announcement that Christ the Savior is born. All the world had to know of this miraculous birth!

Then we look at the simplicity of the manger scene. Cows, donkeys, and pigeons were among the first to greet our new born King. That night the sun did go down like any other day. It was an ordinary day and the beginning of an ordinary night.

To the shepherds, that night was a life changing event. They were the first to hear the angels sing Glory, Glory to the new born King. First to see Jesus lying in the hay. First to worship, first to care…doesn’t it make you wish that you could have been there?

But to the stranger down the street, it was just an ordinary night. Maybe he heard a baby cry or a dog bark. To him they are just noises to keep him awake. History is fulfilled only doors down the street…. and he can’t get up to see.

Won’t you get up and come to the Sonshine Singers’ ministry? Hear the vocalists sing as the angels sang on that first Christmas night! Hark the Herald! Christ the new born King is here! Prophesy is fulfilled on this seemingly ordinary night some 2010 years ago. COME AND WORSHIP THE KING!!

Sonshine Devotional Day 3

God So Loved the World!

Now begins the devotional series which is inspired by the music the Sonshine Singers will be singing on March 19th 7:00 p.m. and March 20th 2:00 p.m. 2010.

We are football fans and we enjoy the college and pro games alike. As I pen my thoughts, I’m reflecting back over this past season and remembering the “person” who tends to hold up the sign that says, “John 3:16.” Usually you will see that sign in the end zone. Now that causes me to ask this question. Why don’t I ever see this sign on the 50 yard line? Do the Christians all sit in the end zone?

John 3:16, “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

There you have it! The whole gospel rolled up into one simple verse. “God so loved the world…” is such a heart moving thought. If only we could get this message out to the entire world. One man has tried to do just that. His name is Jesus.

Now as I think more about my question, “why just the end zone?” I am beginning to think about where Jesus would sit during a football game. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. Surely at any football game He could easily buy all the sky boxes. But, I don’t think so. I think Jesus would rather sit in the end zone.

The next time you see someone hold up the sign, “John 3:16″ don’t just say to yourself, “Oh…that’s nice.” Ask yourself two questions. Do I really believe? How can I help the person holding the sign to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the land?

See you in the end zone!

God’s Wondrous Love For Us

One of my favorite words in the English language – I don’t know any other language :) – is wonder.

When I was a boy, I would see or hear something and if I didn’t understand it, I would wonder about it. Now that I’m a man, all too many times, if I don’t understand something, my response is now “….oh well.”

I don’t take time to wonder anymore partly because I just don’t seem to have enough time. I’m certain that you probably face the same dilemma I do.

But when I think of God….somehow there is time to wonder. Time spent with Him is so meaningful.

Once an elderly lady showed me her “catches of the day”—she was fishing. After some conversation, she asked me if I knew how she got to be so old. Of course, I didn’t have a clue. At which time she informed me that she fishes a lot because when you are fishing, “God doesn’t mark time.”

I’ve tried my fishing skills. Let’s just say I’m glad they sell fish at the grocery store. Now I want to spend more time with God and wonder. I wonder about how He loves each of us so much. I wonder how I’ve learned to love Him more each day. Then I wonder about one more thing. Does God mark time spent with Him?

Spend some time with the Sonshine Singers March 19th or 20th at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. Come to this ministry…and make time to worship our loving Father and His Son, Jesus Christ!

Sonshine Devotional Day 1

Published Mar 06, 2010 10:21:47 AM

I’m BACK!!

Last spring the Sonshine Singers sent you a daily devotional. Those devotionals began forty days before the ministry in Ames, Iowa. This year, we are planning a devotional for each song presented in the ministry….plus a few extra.

As I am writing this, the Sonshine Singers are again practicing their music. They practice not because they want you to necessarily enjoy good music. They practice because they want their music to be flawless before the Lord. Remember the sacrifice of the unblemished sheep in the Old Testament? When you bring your sacrifice before the Lord, you should bring your best.

The best singers, the best pianist, the best director (I’m married to her and a little biased) all bring what they do best not to entertain you. The Sonshine Singers praise the Lord in song because their hearts are filled with joy and love. Loving our Lord Jesus will compel you to want to do your best for Him.

You see, the Sonshine Singers sing to an audience of One. If you happen to be at Iowa Central Community College on March 19th and/or March 20th, you can hear their praises. If you are there, you too will be in the presence of One.

Pray for this ministry as you have so faithfully done in the past….then come and worship with Sonshine and open your heart to the message of “God’s Wondrous Love for Us.”
